Mr. T. F. Cheeseman

Mr. T. F. Cheeseman, F.L.S., F.Z.S., Curator of the Auckland Museum, Meteorological Observer, and Secretary to the Auckland Acclimatization Society, is a son of the Rev. Thomas Cheeseman, dissenting minister, and was born at Hull, Yorkshire, England, in 1847. He accompanied his parents in 1851 to New Zealand, and was educated at Parnell Grammar School, under the Rev. Dr. Kinder, and completed his educational course under the Rev. Mr. Blackburn, at St. John's College. On leaving college Mr. Cheeseman spent some years studying botany, and made numerous journeys through the North Island, collecting various plants; at the same time he corresponded and exchange with European and American botanists. He then started farming, but still continued to add to his already large botanical collections. In 1874 a curator was required for the Auckland Museum, and Mr. Cheeseman's knowledge of New Zealand botany secured for him the appointment. He has travelled through the whole of New Zealand, and the Kermadec Islands, collecting plants, and also made an expeditio to Rarotonga with the same object. Mr. Cheeseman, as an authority on New Zealand plants, is well known throughout the colonies, and amongst European and American botanists. He is at present engaged on behalf of the New Zealand Government in the preparation of a systematic work on the botany of New Zealand, containing a description of all the known species. It is intended to supplement Sir Joseph Hooker's work on the New Zealand Flora.
