Inspector of Factories Office.

Office Of Inspector Of Factories (Department of Labour), old City Council Chambers, High Street, Mr. H. Ferguson is inspector of factories for the Auckland district. According to the inspector's reports, there are in Auckland 900 places which come under classification as factories, employing upwards of 8,000 male and female employees. Mr. Ferguson also states that the Act is operating smoothly and gives general satisfaction, whilst the working premises, on the whole, have been greatly improved and are better conducted.

Mr. Hubert Ferguson, Inspector of Factories and Labour Agent for Auckland, has been in the public service for nearly forty years Born in the north of Ireland in 1846, and educated in his native place, he came to New Zealand in 1862 in the ship “Black Swan.” On arrival in Otago he tried his fortune at gold digging, but soon returned to Dunedin and entered the prison service. In this department he remained thirty years, filling positions in Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Wellington. On the formation of the Labour Department he was appointed inspector of factories for Canterbury, and in 1892 was transferred to Auckland in the same capacity. Mr. Fergnson married Miss Costello in 1865, and has two sons and three daughters.
