Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry.

District Office Of Registrar Of Births, Deaths, And Marriages. This department is situated in the Custom House, Custom Street West.

Mr. Edmund Humphrey Lyons, Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, Registrar of Electors and Medical Practioners, etc., for the Auckland district, was born in 1859 in India, where his father, Colonel E. W. Lyons, was an officer in the Bombay Staff Corps. Young Lyons was sent to England to be educated, and after leaving college went to South Africa, where he took part in the Zulu war, being present at the relief of Isandula and Rorke's Drift. On the conclusion of the war, he engaged for some years in sugar-planting in Natal. Mr. Lyons arrived in New Zealand in 1884 and in the same year received an appointment under the General Government in the Public Works Department, Wellington. Four years later he was transferred to the Registrar-General's Department, and in 1893 received his present appointment. Mr. Lyons married in 1884 Miss Alice Aubrey, daughter of the late Mr. H. R. Aubrey, Resident Magistrate at Whangarei, and has one child.
