Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. Banks

Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. Banks, Commanding the Auckland District, retired from the 7th Dragoon Guards (Princess Royal's) in December, 1891, and came to New Zealand from India in February, 1892. He was appointed to the command of the Auckland district on the 1st of April, 1897, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the New Zealand militia. Lieutenant-Colonel Banks served

in the 2nd Battalion 24th Foot, (South Wales Borderers) in India, Burmah, and England, from June, 1867, to March, 1875; in the 12th (Prince of Wales) Royal Lancers from March, 1875, to September, 1880, as adjutant, when he was selected for promotion to captain of the 7th Dragoon Guards (Princess Royal's) which he joined in England in 1880 and accompanied to Egypt, where he took part in the campaign. He had his horse shot under him at the action of Mahsomah; was present at the action of Kassassin; received the medal, bronze star, and Medjidie 4th class, and was mentioned in despatches. He went Home with his regiment, and was afterwards in India, whence he came to New Zealand.
