Exclusive of what may be termed the military raw material of the New Zealand Militia, the effective military forces of the Auckland provincial district consist of the Permanent Militia, Permanent Artillery, the Unattached Active List, District Reserve Corps, Honorary Unattached List, and the Volunteers, of whom there are, in town and country—including the members of the members of the Auckland Garrison Band, the Drum and Fife Band, and the 163 members of the St. John's College, King's College, and Auckland Grammar School Cadets—2,361 of all ranks. Lieut.-Colonel Banks is the officer in command of the district.

The present establishment of the Volunteer force in the City of Auckland itself, and the dates of the formation of the various corps are as follows : — No. 1 Victoria Rifles, February 15, 1866; “A” Battery Artillery, and the Auckland Naval Artillery, February 20, 1866; Ponsonby Naval Artillery, April 22, 1885; Devonport Sub-Marine Miners, July 7, 1894; College Rifles, June 17, 1897; No. 1 New Zealand Native Rifles, November 23, 1897; Devonport Coast Guards, February 10, 1898; No. 2 New Zealand Native Rifles, April 14, 1898; Auckland Rifles, April 21, 1898; No. 3 New Zealand Native Rifles, and the No. 2 Victoria Rifles, April 28, 1898; Auckland Bearer Corps, May 4, 1898; Newton Rifles, October 1, 1898; Auckland Mounted Rifles, October 31, 1898; Auckland Engineers, November 8, 1898; Seddon Horse Mounted Rifles, May 9, 1900. There are also three corps of cadets, namely, St. John's College Cadets, King's College Cadets, and the Auckland Grammar School Cadets; and two bands—the Garrison Band and the Drum and Fife Band.
