Revenue and Expenditure.

The buildings of Auckland City proper number about 8000, and are increasing with fair rapidity. The annual ratable value of the property of the borough is about a third of a million. For the year ending the 31st of March, 1899, the Council's total receipts amounted to £69,184 3s 2d, the various items being—General rates, £14,615 0s 6d; special rates £15,200 13s; water rates, £16,458 3s 11d; rents, £9009 8s 1d, and licenses, £4969 8s 10d. Besides the general rate of 9d. in the £ of annual rental, there are a special page 116 rate of one shilling and threepence, a water consumers' rate of sixpence, a charitable aid rate of threepence, and a library rate of a halfpenny. This total of 2s 9 1/2d is about sixpence in the £ less than the total rates of Wellington. Of the expenditure, the largest items are—interest on loans (which amount to £449,900), £25,233 11s 2d; construction and maintenance of roads and streets, £18,291 14s 8d; drainage, £1,424 4s. The streets are of a total length of about fifty miles, and are nearly all formed and metalled.
