Mr. Frederick Ward Merriman

Mr. Frederick Ward Merriman represented Auckland Suburbs in the House of Representatives from 1854 to 1859. He was appointed chairman of Committees, and discharged the duties of the office till 1856. Mr. Merriman was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England, in October, 1818, and, following in the footsteps of his father, Mr. Thomas Merriman, he studied for the law. In 1844 he arrived in Auckland, where he commenced practice as a solicitor and notary public. From 1856 to 1861 he was Provincial Land Officer, and subsequently Crown Solicitor. page 101 Mr. Merriman, who was prominently identified with Freemasonry, married the widow of Captain Ringrose Atkyns. He died at Parnell, Auckland, in July, 1865.
