Rev. James Wallis

Rev. James Wallis, M.A., Surgeon, who represented Auckland City West from 1877 to 1881, was born in Aberdeenshire in 1825, and is the eldest son of Mr. William Wallis. He was educated at Aberdeen University and gained his M.A. degree in 1844. As a clergyman and missionary of the Presbyterian Church, Dr. Wallis ministered at Dundee and Aberdeen in Scotland, and at Essequibo and Demerara in British Guiana. In 1863, he passed as a surgeon in Edinburgh with the object of becoming a medical missionary. Finally he came to this Colony in 1865 via Africa and Australia, as surgeon of the “Rangitoto” and other vessels. After a few years as minister of the old church of St. David's, he built the church known as the Newton Kirk. He sold this property in 1881 and for some time carried on a farm at

Riverhead, returning in 1896 to Richmond near Auckland, where he now lives. In parliament Dr. Wallis was a constant advocate for women's suffrage and other reforms, and he still takes an interest in political questions. Dr. Wallis married in 1862 Miss Elizabeth Poole, daughter of Richard Poole, of Edinburgh, M.D., F.R.C.P.E.
