Mr. Joseph Hargreaves

Mr. Joseph Hargreaves was elected to represent the Auckland Suburbs in the House of Representatives in 1860. He was born in Liverpool, England, in 1821. While still a young man he arrived in New Zealand, and purchased an estate at East Tamaki. Several years later Mr. Hargreaves sold this property and removed to Kaipara, where he leased and purchased a large tract of land from the Maoris. Mr. Hargreaves is still remembered as an ardent sportsman, and a successful breeder of racehorses. He was a member of the Auckland Provincial Council. Mr. Hargreaves married a sister of Admiral Spain, of the British Navy. He died on the 10th of April, 1880, leaving a family of four sons and six daughters.
