Mr. George Arthur, Chief Engineer of the s.s. “Tainui,” was born in 1864 at Fortrose, Rossshire, Scotland, where he was educated. He served his apprenticeship as an engineer with Messrs. Barclay, Curlet and Co., and became fifth engineer of the s.s. “Arawa” in 1885. Subsequently Mr. Arthur served on the s.s. “Tainui” and s.s. “Mamari.” For a time he left the service, joining the Portuguese ship “Mozambique.” He re-entered the employ of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company as chief refrigerator of the page 787 s.s. “Arawa,” and after two voyages, became second engineer of that steamer. In 1894 he was promoted to the position he now holds.
