Captain Thomas Prosser

Captain Thomas Prosser, of the s.s. “Pakeha,” is it native of Pembrokeshire, Wales, b[gap — reason: illegible]ring been born there in 1857. At the age of about fifteen years [gap — reason: illegible]he went to sea with his father, voyaging with him in the Mediterranean and West Indies and elsewhere. About sixteen years ago he first came to New Zealand, and followed a seafaring life. In 1884 he entered the service of the Shaw, Saviil and Albion Company as fourth officer of the “Arawa,” and, after passing through the ranks of second and third officer, was appointed to the command of that ship in April, 1895, at San Francisco, Cal., U.S.A. Captain Prosser brought the “Arawa” back to Sydney, N.S.W., and thence went to London, where the ship was chartered by the Trans-Atlantic S.S. Company for the Spanish Government. The captain was then transferred to the “Pakeha,” entering upon his duties in July, 1895.
