Mr. James Forrester, Second Engineer of the s.s. “Tongariro,” was born in 1865 at Kilmarnock, Scotland, where he was educated. He served his apprenticeship with Mr. Thompson, of Glasgow. Mr. Forrester first went to sea on a vessel of the Blue Star line of steamers, sailing out of London, and joined the New Zealand Shipping Company's service in 1889. After serving on the s.s. “Rimutaka” and subsequently on the s.s. “Kaikoura,” Mr. Forrester was promoted in 1895 to the position of second engineer of the s.s. “Tongariro.”
