Mr. Walter Brown

Mr. Walter Brown, Chief Engineer of the s.s. “Ruapehu,” was born at Lincolnshire, England, in 1858. He served his apprenticeship with Marshall, the noted engineer of that county, and went to Hull, Yorkshire, as an improver. On going to sea, he joined Messrs. Rankin and Gilmour's Anchor line of steamers, and in 1884 became connected with the New Zealand Shipping Company. Serving in succession on the s.s. “Aorangi,” page 780 “Tongariro” and “Rimutaka,” as second engineer, Mr. Brown was afterwards promoted to the position of chief engineer of the s.s. “Otarama,” and in 1896 was transferred to the fine ship in which he now sails. He is married, and has five children.
