Mr. Edwin Thomas Smith
Mr. Edwin Thomas Smith, Second Officer of the s.s. “Ruahine,” was born in 1871 at Aberdeen, and was educated in London. He served two years on the training ship “Worcester,” and then went to sea in the Shaw, Savill line of steamers. After four years he joined the New Zealand Shipping Company's service. He was fourth officer of the s.s. “Tongariro” in 1892, being transferred to the “Aorangi” as third officer, and subsequently to the s.s. “Ruahine,” in which vessel he secured promotion to the position he now holds.
