Captain Henry Arthur Rutter

Captain Henry Arthur Rutter, of the Union Steam Ship Company's s.s. “Manawatu,” is a native of London, where he was born in 1856. He went to sea in the ship “Queen of London,” in 1869, and was employed in that ship and various other vessels for some years. Captain Rutter came to Port Chalmers, in 1875, in the ship “William Davie,” and found employment on vessels in the intercolonial trade. He joined the Union Steam Ship Company, in August, 1888, as second officer, was promoted to first officer in May, 1890, and has had command of the “Manawatu” since July, 1893.
