The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Wellington Provincial District]

Knapp, Alban Vincent

Knapp, Alban Vincent, Farrier, 23 Dixon Street, Wellington. Private residence, Owen Street. Telephone page 681 747. This is the oldest-established business of its kind in Wellington, dating as far back as 1850. In 1880 it was taken over by its present proprietor, Mr. A. V. Knapp, who is a native of Portsmouth, England. He came to New Zealand with his parents in 1874 by the ship “E. P. Bouverie,” and has since thoroughly learned his trade with his father. The business premises, which are centrally situated in the town, are built of wood and iron, having a floorage space of 1500 square feet. There are two forges in constant use at present, for, since acquiring the above premises, Mr. Knapp has, through the excellence and promptness of his work, greatly increased the business, and now employs five hands. At the Agricultural and Pastoral Shows, held in Wellington in 1882 and 1883, Mr. Knapp brought his business prominently before the public by exhibiting and taking a first prize for a show-case of horse-shoes of great variety. The shoes were made in thorough accordance with the latest modern scientific principles, and were very beautifully finished. Most of them are still to be seen at Mr. Knapp's premises in Dixon Street.
