Water Supply

Water Supply.

The water-supply of the Empire City is exceptionally good. It is obtained from the Wainui-o-mata stream—about nineteen miles away, where the quantity is practically unlimited—and conducted to the city in thirty-inch iron pipes. The dam is about 350 feet above the lowest levels of the city, which gives a good working pressure for the water machinery so largely used by small manufacturers. page 220 For this purpose the water is supplied by meter, at a cost of fourpence per thousand gallons. The Wainui-o-mata waterworks cost the city £130,000, and the investment gives very general satisfaction. The old water-supply, which cost £80,000, is still retained in perfect working order, and though the water is much inferior to that of Wainui, it is very useful in case of a temporary stoppage. The reservoirs and the water-supply generally will be found more fully described under heading “Wellington Corporation.”
