Carry on Phil [1960]

Act 2. Scene 4

Act 2. Scene 4.

The Wellington Errordrome—the population are all present to welcome the victorious party— who, on their way home, have made triumphal tours of every major city in the world (even Auckland). When the plane lands, the party disembark. A deputation presents to Phil a scroll signed by everyone in New Zealand asking Phil to assume the mantle of Prime Minister. Wal immediately offers to resign, Phil accepts the job and the show ends with a deleriously happy finale.

Finale:

Carry on Phil
Though the end's here
Carry on Phil
We're your friends here
We will back you
Not attack you
Never sack you
Carry on Phil.

Carry on Phil
Save the nation
Carry on Phil
Stop inflation
We will choose you
Won't abuse you
We won't lose you
Carry on Phil.

Garden of roses, garden of Eden
Things are gonna be grand
You'll be our Moses
And you'll be leadin' us into the promised land.

Carry on Phil
Skies are blue now
Carry on Phil
Thanks to you now
There'll be laughter
Ever after
You will have ter
Carry on Phil.

There'll be singing
There'll be gladness
Bells are ringing
No more sadness
Things are sunny
Milk and honey
Lots of money
Carry on Phil.

Birds are chirping
Bees are buzzin'
Drunks are burping
By the dozen
Things are hazy
Whoops a daisy
Going crazy
Carry on Phil.

No need for working
We'll have a pension
From the cradle to grave
We'll all be shirkin'
We've no intention
Of ever trying to save.

Carry on Phil
Promise champagne
Carry on Phil
Then your campaign
It will race in
Jubilation
Through the nation
Carry on Phil!

Final Chorus

This is the end of our student revelry,
So we're going to go back once more to our books
Every one of us has a mind,
Of an academic kind
So please don't judge us by our looks.

This is the end of our annual devilry
There is nothing else left for us but to go
We've repeated a thousand times
All the authors' rhymes
Andante and Fortissimo

You saw politicians
All the country's leading lights
Thundering, Blundering
All along the way
Parliamentary Nationalists and Labourites
Dirty skites
Having their big fat say

A Country hick who's stock of brains was rather sparse
The sporting game brought him fame
Walter got the boot
Our Island maidens won your hearts
With oscillating nether parts
But please gentlemen keep off the grass

This is the end but one thing we'll all allow
From our varsity standing up on the hill
It's been fun to come into town
With our hair let down
But Extravaganza's over now
Extravaganza's over now...
