Semolina and Bosun Bung

Semolina: When sun descends and stars appear—
Bung: She means at closing-up time—
Semolina: And mystic music charms the ear—
Bung: Because it's cat and pup time,
Both: Your steps through lamp-lit streets you turn,
For reasons difficult to learn.

Semolina: Attracted by you know not what—
Bung: This isn't reassuring!—
Semolina: You view each well-remembered spot—
Bung: For "spots" are most alluring.
Both: Familiar scenes, but sadder now;
You see them all, you can't say how.

Semolina: You watch a tram go flashing by—
Bung: And wink at the conductor—
Semolina: It brings the moisture to your eye—
Bung: And so does the destructor.
Both: Within you, joy and sorrow blend,
But why—you cannot comprehend.

Semolina: Perhaps you turn your weary feet—
Bung: Corn plasters, one a penny!—
Semolina: Along the street called Manners Street—
Bung: Where people haven't any.
Both: You see the jostling crowd go by,
And shed a tear—you can't say why.

Semolina: A maiden bumps you, spoils your hair—
Bung: You wish that you could pull her's—
Semolina: But on she speeds, you know not where—
Bung: It's probably to Fuller's.
Both: You seek a place where men are fewer,
Impelled by motives quite obscure.

Semolina: Along the Esplanade you fare—
Bung: Although it's rather stony—
Semolina: And deeply breathe the scented air—
Bung: Ngahauranga and Petone!
Both: The moon ascends from Rona Bay,
But why it does, you cannot say.

Semolina: At length, when all the streets are still—
Bung: And half the cops are dozing—
Semolina: You heave a sigh, you thrill a thrill—
Bung: And curse this early closing.
Both: You wander home all lachrymose;
But why, precisely, goodness knows!
