The Diary of James Brogden, August 1871 – December 1872

25 April 1872

25 April 1872

Next day, on going by special Train to Winton, when the Train was proceeding at a good speed, the points at a Meat Preserving Works near Winton were found to be open and we ran off the line. The deputation were greatly alarmed, and the misadventure telegraphed all over the country. We soon obtained a carriage and proceeded en route for Kingston on Lake Wakitipu, as far as Dipton Plain, staying at Flint’s Accommodation House. Some of the people and traffic for the Gold Diggings, pass up this way, via the Lake to Queenstown. The land in the valleys is fair, and the hills are covered with natural rough grass. Most of the land in held in large Runs, and a good deal may be purchased.
