Mr Conyers, Manager had instructions to give us a special Train to the Bluff and some of the self-constituted Railway Committee, the Mayor, Ex-Superintendent, &c. came down with us, not anxious apparently to see an outsider engaged in the construction of Works in their part. In the evening we dined, and at dinner a special request came for me to attend a meeting down stairs on Railway matters, whereupon Mr Henderson and I went. Several members of the Press were present, - and so many questions were asked and page 98 Such gross misconstruction prevailed respecting the Govt. Railways that I found it best to quietly speak to them as in an ordinary conversation and explain my own views. These were ultimately adopted with great enthusiasm and the proceeding ended by the company drinking my health in champagne, &c. &c.
