New Zealand Whales and Dolphins

Acknowledgments

Acknowledgments

A variety of scientific publications, including those listed under references, provided scource material for this booklet. The whale spout profiles have been modified from an article on northeast Pacific and Arctic cetaceans by Gordon C. Pike, and the tooth-count graph is based on one used by Anita E. Daugherty in an account of the marine mammals of California.

The illustrations have been made either from actual specimens studied in the field or at the Dominion Museum, or from measurements and photographs on the museum whale file. I am indebted to the many persons responsible for maintaining the Dominion Museum whale file over the years, and to those fishermen and beachcombers who have sent reports, photographs, or specimens of cetaceans to the museum.

I am very grateful to Messrs Rod Abel and Alex Dobbins of Marineland of New Zealand, Napier, for cooperating in the study of animals in their aquaria. I also thank Captain W. F. J. Morzer Bruyns, Bussum, Holland, for supplying some very useful personal observations and measurements of Pacific cetaceans. Finally, I thank Richard Veitch. Wildlife Service, Auckland, for the excellent colour photograph of Delphinus.
