Acknowledgments

I wish to acknowledge those who encouraged me to explore the fascinating world of New Zealand writing, including Jim Baxter, Kevin Maher, John A. Lee, Ron Mason, Eileen Duggan, Frank Sargeson, Denis Glover, Monte Holcroft, Lou Johnson, Ruth France, Bill Oliver, Alistair Campbell, Albion Wright, John Summers, Jim Bertram, Lawrence Baigent, John Garrett, Winston Rhodes, Frank McKay and Michael King.

In addition to these I particularly want to acknowledge the considerable assistance I have received from my friends Gerard Crotty, Cathy Harrison and Pat Hutchison. I also owe a debt of gratitude to Barbara Lyon, without whose skill and commitment the two bibliographies we jointly authored would never have been completed, and to Bridget Williams who taught me a great deal about editing a text. More recently I owe thanks to Paul Millar for encouraging me to complete this project and for supplying some texts. My gratitude is also due to Geoff Miles who assisted with the provision of texts, to my sisters Betty Sorensen and Eileen Thawley who never failed to provide support and encouragement, to my niece and nephew Helen-Mary and Peter Sorensen for their support, and to my friends David Culpan, Cecilia Clarke, John Craddock S.M., Allan Jones S.M., Steve Thrupp, Warren and Vicki Reid, Brian and Valda Woods, Stephen and Jo Baxter, Steve Ashton, Darren Crawford, Jane Baxter, and David and Matthew Harrison – all of whom helped me in various ways.

Father Michael Hill, formerly editor of the Tablet, deserves my thanks for supplying me with copies of articles. So does Father Brian O’Connell who provided articles from the Marist Messenger. Brother Gerard Hogg and Ken Scadden provided information from the archives of the Society of Mary, and Father Paddy Kinsella and John Baxter have checked the Glossary of Māori Words and Phrases. More recently, Father Colin Durning helped me plug some gaps in my knowledge. I am grateful to all of them.

I have been greatly assisted by the staffs of the Macmillan Brown Library at the University of Canterbury, the Hocken Library at the University of Otago, and the J.C. Beaglehole Room at Victoria University Library (especially Sue Hirst and Tracy White), and I owe a special debt of thanks to the staff of the National Library of New Zealand and to interloan librarians Sue Thompson and Mariko Yoshioka at the University of Canterbury Library.

I am pleased to express my gratitude to Mike Minehan from whose O Jerusalem: James K. Baxter: An Intimate Portrait I have quoted extensively.

My thanks are due to Fergus Barrowman of Victoria University Press for encouraging me to complete this book and for producing it. I was also greatly assisted by Kyleigh Hodgson, the publisher's editor, and by Tordis Flath who compiled the index.

Finally I wish to acknowledge the help I received from Jim Baxter’s mother Millicent, and the friendship, help and encouragement so generously given by his wife Jacquie and, more recently, by his son John.
