Te Rahuitanga whenua tuatahi a nga Maori i te Takutai o te taha Hauauru, i rahuitia i te tau 1854 e Ngatitoa. Ko etahi kupu i roto i to ratou pukapuka hoko o te Waipounamu ki a te Kuini, i tuhia i te 13 o Tihema, 1854, koia enei:—"Ko tenei whenua ka tukua tonutia atu e matou ki te pakeha, hei muri, ka whakatakotoria nga pihi hei kainga mo matou me o matou tamariki."

Na, i te "pukapuka hoko o Arahura" i hokona ai "Poutini" i te takutai Hauauru e Ngaitahu e noho ana ki reira, i te 21 o nga ra o Mei 1860 e puta ana enei kupu:—

"Otira, tenei ano etahi wahi whenua mo ratou i roto i aua whenua ano, ko nga pukapuka A me B aua whenua ki tenei pukapuka e mau ana kihai i utu aua whenua."
