B Newspapers

Most of the newspapers consulted were small daily or thrice-weekly publications, with only two or three pages of text apart from advertisements. Page references have not been given for these. The weekly newspapers were much more substantial, so for these page references are given.

Some sections of Part I are based on an intricate collation from several newspaper sources, and no attempt has been made to provide detailed references for these. Care has been taken to date events in the text so that the sources can be traced with little difficulty.

C Statistics

Most of the statistics used in this study have been drawn from three official sources:

(1)

Statistics of New Zealand—a single-volume, annual publication during our period.

(2)

New Zealand Census Returns—again a single-volume publication at this time.

(3)

AJHR1886, D-1, RETURN No. 10—the New Zealand Railway's ‘Statement of Revenue and Expenditure of each Station for the Year ended 31st March, 1886’.

Statistics from these three sources have not been referenced. References have been given for statistics drawn from other sources.
