Mr. William Birdling, sometime of “Lansdowne,” Halswell, was a very old and prominent colonist, who arrived in New Zealand by the ship “London” in 1842. Born in Frome, Somersetshire, England, in 1822. Buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Halswell, Canterbury. William Birdling had 7 sons and 1 daughter, by 1913, 3 sons had died: Robert Henry Birdling died 6 August 1902 followed very shortly by his brother George Ashmin Birdling died 15 Aug 1902, both died of the same respiratory complaint. Frederick George Birdling died 27 Sept 1904
