In its heyday the town of Hokitika had many Jewish citizens, and headstones in the Jewish cemetery mark the names of some who were prominent in the town's early history Rabbi Jacob Levi Saphir, on a visit from Melbourne in 1862, disembarked in Dunedin on a Friday.
