In former years I have seen your beautiful valley in great part laid waste, and its inhabitants bravely fighting for their homes. From that state I have seen it restored to peace, a high state of cultivation, and great prosperity. In the midst of all these changes, I have ever received from you the most hearty welcome, and proofs of esteem and regard. I can never forget these things; and you may rely that my anxiety for your welfare shall always lead me to do my utmost to promote your prosperity.
