Men's Committee
Men's Committee
Jim Battersby
Jim is a third-year Arts student who hopes to complete his B.A. this year. His past and present college activities include SCM Executive, 1946-47; Rugby First XV, 1946-47; Debating Society and Tennis Club, and as a member of the Athletic Club he recently represented Wellington against visiting American athletes.
Jim is emphatic that student affairs should be controlled purely by students. He suggests that a committee be formed to investigate and arrange student accommodation, and that the cafeteria facilities be improved. He would like to see greater encouragement of sport in the College and is also anxious that attempts be made to make the city more University-conscious and the University more worthy of public support.
Denzil Brown
Fourth year Arts, President VUC Student Christian Movement for two years, member of Hockey Club, Drama Club, on the committee of Student Relief, a resident of Weir House.
In his policy he is pro: VUC fully realising Itself as a University; providing new and improving old student boarding accommodation; immediate and drastic steps to provide a well-appointed mixed common room; better VUC-Community relations; fullest cooperation within Such bodies as NZUSA to form a strong NZU opinion; exploration of avenues of international student understanding and sympathy.
Peter Froome
An ex-serviceman, Peter entered the College in 1939 and is at present in his final year of B.Sc. Sport has been the keynote of his activities, with hockey as his major interest. This year he is a member of the Hockey Club Committee, and VUC delegate to NZU and the Wellington Hockey Association. He has represented VUC five times in Winter Tournament. VUC Blue, 1941-42; an examiner of the Royal Life Saving Society and delegate to the Wellington Swimming Association; and has participated less conspicuously in Athletics, Gymnastics and Table Tennis.
His policy is the propagation of sport in all its phases, with an emphasis on increased VUC virility. He would like to see greater interclub co-operation, and better facilities within the College for these activities.
Athol Howarth
A part-time student, a returned serviceman candidate for Men's Committee. Has attended VUC since 1937 with the exception of the years, 1940-41. Represented VUC at Easter Tournament, 1939, 1946, 1947. Captain of the Halsam Shield Team, 1947; Miniature Shooting Representative, 1946; President of the Political Science Society, the Victoria Defence Rifle Club, the VUC Miniature Rifle Club. Procession Controller and Assistant House Manager; 1946, and assistant Procession Controller, 1947.
Keenly interested in Student affairs, he would like to see a full-time Treasurer appointed and wishes to see some action regarding the Building' Fund.
Pix Hurrell
A Science student, Pix was at CUC, 1943-44, and VUC since. He helped to found the Swords Club in 1945 an has been club captain since then. President of the' Drama Club, he produced "Mr. Bolfrey" and "Private Lives" and has been in Extrav., 1945-46. He was assistant Procesh Controller, 1946 and Procesh Controller this year. Pix played for Rugby Football Club in 1945 and has been coach for the Junior B for the past two seasons.
He is an ex-serviceman and would like to see planned support by the Executive for all clubs on a more rational basis than in the past He would also support an immediate effort towards procuring the rest of the finance for the Students' Building.
Gordon McDonald
Gordon enrolled as a commerce student in 1938, and after one lecture decided to become a teacher. This will not be his last year at Varsity, even if it should be his final year for B.A.
Gordon has worked behind the scenes in several Extravs., and is secretary of the Tramping Club. This year he and Dick Collins, with negligible student support, scratched together the best-Belling "Cappicade" ever.
While he agrees with the policy of the present Executive, he sees room for improvement in some directions. However, like other ordinary students, he knows little about the practical difficulties that have been faced so he makes no promises.
Peter Morris
Peter is a full-time Honours student this year. He is an ex-Training College student and first came to Victoria in 1940. He was overseas from 1942 to 1945. He has been Assistant Secretary of the Students' Association for the past year, was Senior Tournament Delegate for Easter Tournament this year, and a member of the Blues Committee. He took part in Extravs. in 1940, 1941, and 1946, and was Assistant Controller in 1947. He is interested in all student sporting and cultural activities, represented VUC in Athletics in 1941, plays Soccer this year.
Peter thinks that the next year must see a campaign for contributions to the New Student Building from old students and the general public, as soon as the plans have been drawn up. He will continue to press for the establishment of Departmental Committees, and for Student Representation on the Senate and thinks that during Tournaments more volunteers from sports clubs should assist with the organization.
Mike Murray
Mike came to Victoria in 1944, and is a Science student. He is a member of the Medical Scheme Committee, the Cafeteria Inquiry Committee and is Gym. Controller. He is a member of the Debating and Biological Societies and of "Salient" Staff. Mike has taken part in three Extravs. and has been Chief Guide of the Tramping Club for the past two years. He is a member of the retiring Executive.
Mike is keen to find means of improving the Cafeteria both as regards service and price of meals. As Exchange Manager of "Salient" he endeavours to establish better contact with universities outside New Zealand and would like the Executive to continue this work. He also wants continuation of the policy [ unclear: of] full cooperation with NZUSA. He is interested in setting up an Orientation Course on the lines of those in Australian Universities to help acquaint freshers with the College.
